Guidelines for Heraldic display by members of The Teutonic Order

The heraldry of the Order of the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary's Hospital in Jerusalem for Historical Recreationists shall be based on the real Teutonic Order.
These guidelines are being tweaked for both historical accuracy and consistency, to accomodate the need to difference us from the real order and to accomodate rules and laws of The Adrian Empire, where this guild is based.
Please be aware that these guidelines may change up until the first official meeting of the guild at the 2010 Banner War Southwest.
  1. The arms of The Order shall be "Argent, a cross Pattée Sable".
All members of The Order may display this device on a shield.

  2. The Großkomtur shall wear a white tunic or surcoat emblazoned with "A cross pattée fitched at all points Sable".

  3. The arms of the Hochmeister shall be "Argent, upon a cross potent Sable surmounted by a cross flory Or upon an escutcheon of pretense Argent, a cross pattée Sable".
The Hochmeister may choose to display this device on a flag instead of a shield.
  4. The arms of Priorat of Sion shall be "Argent, a cross Pattée Sable surmounted by a Fleur-de-Sion Argent".
All members of Priorat may display this device on a shield.

  5. The Großprior and bishops shall wear a white tunic or surcoat emblazoned with "A cross pattée fitched cotised Sable".
  6. All other male full members of The Order shall wear a white tunic or surcoat emblazoned with a "Cross pattée fitched Sable" upon the chest.

  7. All other female full members of The Order shall wear those little lacy things that make guys use poor judgement... Either that or a white tabbard emblazoned with "A cross pattée fitched Sable" upon the chest, the same as male full members.

  8. The "HalbBrüder" (half members) and "SariantBrüder" (non-knightly combatants) of The Order shall wear a light grey tabbard/tunic or surcoat emblazoned with "A cross pattée fitched Sable" upon the chest.

  9. Knights of The Order may wear a white riding cape or cloak. On the left shoulder shall be a black cross described as "A cross pattée fitched Sable".
    • In all cases the cross shall be no more than twenty four inches (24") in length.
    • On the right shoulder of the knights riding cape or cloak shall be placed the personal heraldic device of the knight as registered in his or her parent organization ie. The Adrian Empire, The SCA or The ECS etc. which shall be roughly the same size as the cross on the left shoulder. This will serve to difference us from the real-world order and to further differentiate between knights and non-knights.
    • All Knights of The Order, male or female, may wear a knightly collar of crosses pattée.
